How to Start a Necklace
Beginning an Add-A-Pearl necklace is one of the most meaningful gifts you can give. Here is everything you need to know to get started.
Step 1
Choose your pearl size.
The most popular size to start a cultured pearl necklace is 6mm. Smaller sizes such as 3mm or 4mm are lovely if you plan to graduate the necklace with larger pearls later, or if you simply prefer the delicate style of smaller pearls.
Step 2
Choose your chain style.
You have your choice of two chain styles. Our Original chain is the traditional style that has been used on all Add-A-Pearl necklaces since 1915 — a petite cable link chain, delicate yet sturdy enough to perfectly complement an Add-A-Pearl necklace.
The Premium chain is slightly heavier and more ornate than the Original.
Step 3
Choose your metal type.
This is purely a personal preference. At Add-A-Pearl, yellow gold has long been the traditional favorite — pearls look bright and radiant against it. In recent years, white gold has become a popular alternative. Both 14k yellow and white gold retain their beauty and shine for a lifetime with minimal care.
Sterling silver offers a lovely, affordable alternative in a white metal.

Step 4
Choose how many pearls to start.
Most necklaces begin with one or three pearls, but you can start with any number you wish — perhaps seven pearls for a 7th birthday, or twenty for a 20th anniversary.
To create a necklace with a specific number, add a one-pearl necklace to your cart, then use the Additional Pearls link to add more until you reach your desired total. At checkout, include a note if you'd like all pearls strung together — we'll handcraft your necklace especially for you.
