What Size Pearl Should I Start With?

One of the most common questions we hear is:

"What size pearl should I start my Add-A-Pearl necklace with?"

The good news is that there isn't a right or wrong answer. The best starting size depends on the look you want to create over time.

Because an Add-A-Pearl necklace grows with each new pearl added, your starting pearl is simply the beginning of the story.

Understanding Pearl Sizes

Pearls are measured in millimeters (mm) across their diameter. A difference of just one millimeter may sound small, but it can noticeably change the overall appearance of a necklace.

At Add-A-Pearl, our most popular starting sizes range from 5.5mm to 7mm, offering a beautiful balance of elegance, versatility, and room for future growth.

Our Most Recommended Starting Size

If you're unsure where to begin, we typically recommend starting with a 5.5mm or 6mm pearl.

These sizes are often considered the "just right" choice:

  • Not too small

  • Not too large

  • Suitable for babies, children, and adults

  • Easy to build upon as the necklace grows

A 5.5mm or 6mm pearl creates a classic look that works beautifully whether you're planning a graduated necklace or a uniform necklace.

Starting a Graduated Necklace

A Graduated Necklace features smaller pearls near the clasp and larger pearls toward the center.

If you plan to create a graduated design, you can start with virtually any pearl size.

As new pearls are added over the years, the necklace is restrung and the pearls are carefully repositioned. The smaller pearls gradually move toward the back of the necklace while larger pearls become the focal point at the center.

Because the pearls will eventually be rearranged, your starting size becomes much less important than the overall journey.

Many families choose a smaller pearl to begin, knowing it will eventually find its place near the clasp as the necklace grows.

Starting a Uniform Necklace

A Uniform Necklace uses pearls that are all approximately the same size throughout the necklace.

If you love a consistent, symmetrical look, you'll want to think more carefully about your starting pearl size since future additions will match that size.

For most customers, we recommend choosing between:

  • 5.5mm for a delicate, classic appearance

  • 6mm for a balanced everyday look

  • 6.5mm–7mm for a fuller, more substantial necklace

The larger the pearl size, the more presence and fullness the finished necklace will have.

Which Style Is Right for Me?

Many families love the timeless elegance of a graduated necklace because it naturally evolves as pearls are added through the years.

Others prefer the clean symmetry of a uniform necklace, where every pearl remains the same size from beginning to end.

Neither choice is better—the decision simply comes down to personal preference.

Still Not Sure?

If you're selecting a first Add-A-Pearl necklace and want a recommendation, we suggest starting with a 5.5mm or 6mm pearl. These sizes offer the greatest flexibility and create a beautiful necklace that can grow for generations.

And remember, we're always happy to help. If you'd like guidance choosing a starting size, simply give us a call. We love helping families begin a tradition that will continue for years to come.
